Beco do Batman: Graffiti Gallery

open gallery is an easy definition for Rua Gonçalo Afonso, Beco do Batman (Batman’s Alley). It is a small alley, near Cemitério São Paulo. With walls entirely devoted to graffiti, its history goes back to the 80s, when a single drawing of a batman appeared on the wall of Villa Madalena.

From then on, students of fine arts began to cover gray walls with these beautiful graffiti drawings. The images are varied, from the stylized letters to cubist influences and psychedelic inspiration. The color caught the attention of the British BBC TV and radio, which on its website described the site as full of “creative energy”. Although not a formal gallery, the Gonçalo Afonso street has its rules: who painted on a certain section of the wall, is the owner of that piece of wall. Drawing without permission is called “atropelar” which is unacceptable, the artist must first ask the owner for the wall.

In three decades, the hidden alley went on to serve as the backdrop for publicity photos, parties and sightseeing. The street is now an inspiration for art lovers, such as grocery store Baraúna on Rua Harmonia. Those who visit can definitely vouch for, that graffiti is not vandalism.
